This is the current listing of items we need to meet the special needs of our patients and those things we have no need for and will not accept. We have tried to cover everything, but if you still have questions, or if you have something you think could be useful, please call us. Also, please DO NOT make deliveries to the Medical Center without first contacting us by phone or personal visit or e-mail (and please never after 5:00 p.m. or weekends).

Acceptable Items

  • Men's Clothing - new or used in very good, clean condition. Please NO used underwear, socks, t-shirts. Primary needs are jeans, winter jackets or sweaters, sweat suits, sport coats, dress pants, shirts and shoes - please call before delivery. We can only accept a limited quantity at any one time.
  • Books - Paperback ONLY. Must be clean and in good condition. Please, no Harlequin romance novels. NO hard bound books.
  • Magazines - ONLY if no more than three (3) months old and in good condition. We can only accept a limited quantity at any one time.
  • Phone cards - please be sure they are current and for domestic use. (no international cards needed)
  • Postage stamps for patients' letters, cards, etc.
  • Personal comfort items - must be new/unopened (small individual sizes are preferred). We can use toothpaste, toothbrushes, shaving cream, combs, deodorant, shampoo, disposable razors, denture cleaner, i.e. Polident, finger nail clippers, chap stick. (We cannot accept the small items you pick up at hotels/motels)
  • Playing cards - may be used but MUST be clean and in good condition.
  • Crossword or Word Find or Sudoku Puzzle Books (NEW).
  • Checks - made payable to VA Medial Center and earmarked for purpose intended to support ongoing programs (see Ongoing Project List).
  • Postage Stamps - please purchase the "FOREVER" stamps.

Non-Acceptable Items

  • Hard bound books of any kind.
  • Clothing/cosmetics for women.
  • Magazines more than three months old.
  • After shave lotion or mouth wash or any other liquid with alcohol content.
  • Never anything in glass containers.
  • No razors except the disposable kind.
  • Lap robes/afghans - we have an overabundance at this time. Try your community nursing homes/senior centers.
  • Used greeting cards - again, check your community needs.
  • No cancelled stamps.
  • Food items of any kind without prior approval from Voluntary Service at the number listed.
  • Jigsaw puzzles.
  • Videos/cassettes.
  • Comfort articles from hotels/motels - i.e. shampoo, lotion, etc.
  • New greeting cards (unless you have called and we have agreed to accept).
