Volunteer Assignments

Every person has skills and talents that can be helpful in the hospital setting. Volunteers are needed at the medical center in a variety of assignments listed below. However, if you have special skills to offer, please call us so we can discuss how you can best use your talents to help our patients.

Pharmacy Assistant Volunteers
Both the inpatient and outpatient pharmacies need volunteers in several different areas - any day - Monday through Friday.
Transportation Volunteers
These volunteers are special people who provide veterans in the community with rides to and from the medical center for clinical visits. Hours vary according to the volunteer's availability, i.e. you may provide service as often as daily or as little as once a month. Before driving, volunteer drivers must provide their driving record for the past five years, have a physical (provided by the VA), have a current driver's license and be fully insured. They are provided further coverage, while performing their volunteer work, by the U.S. Government.
Clerical Assistance Volunteers
Clerical assistance is needed in a variety of patient care areas/support services. Although typing skills are not necessary in many of these areas, the ability to type certainly makes a major difference in the depth of the assignment. A willingness to answer phones and complete small filing tasks are still of prime importance. This is a high priority area of need.
Patient Assistance Volunteers
Volunteers to serve as helpers, including feeders, escorts, deliver/read mail, etc. on 5A-NHCU, NHCU-A&B, Ward 5C Intermediate Long Term Care and Ward 4A. These volunteers are needed any day, including weekends. Volunteers are also needed to help with opening containers and setting up patient trays - any day, any meal.
Hostess Volunteers
Volunteer groups to furnish and serve light refreshments following the quarterly Chaplain's Memorial Service. This Memorial Service will be for those veterans who passed away at this facility during the three-month period. Families will be notified of the service and invited to attend. Volunteers or groups are also needed to furnish and/or serve refreshments for special receptions, etc., on an “as needed” basis.
Escort Volunteers
Escort volunteers are needed to get patients to and from clinic appointments - every day Monday through Friday.
Adopt a Program Volunteers
Volunteer groups to adopt the Dom Health Maintenance Program Patients (approximately 125). Recognize birthdays each month on the 1st Wednesday and 1st Thursday with birthday cards and canteen books.
CBOC Volunteers
Volunteers for our Community Based Outpatient Clinics in Hagerstown and Cumberland, MD and Stephens City, VA. These volunteers provide clerical assistance for the clinics as well as make phone calls to remind patients about their scheduled appointments.
