MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – The Martinsburg VA Medical Center will host the annual Veterans Creative Arts Show, Thursday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the medical centers Dom Dome.

The show is open to the public and will feature more than 50 different categories of artwork produced by local Veterans.

For U.S. Marine Corps Veteran Ron Anderson creating art is more than just a hobby. “Doing stuff like this helps keep us from worrying about our problems,” he said. “While working on art we talk with one another and it helps to distract us from what might be bothering us.”

Dawn Johns, recreation therapy specialist and event coordinator, looks forward to this event every year. “I have been doing this for 17 years and I love it,” she said. “It is great to see so many Veterans creating art and taking advantage of the recreation therapy programs the medical center has for them. Many Veterans find relaxation in the art and the camaraderie with other Veterans they meet in the hobby shop.”

Veterans interested in submitting artwork for the Veterans Creative Arts Show have until Monday, Feb. 27, to submit their entry. Veterans must be enrolled in Department of Veterans Affairs health care to enter the contest. For more information about the Veterans Creative Arts Festival contact Dawn Johns or Shawn Jordan at 304-263-0811, ext. 4594.

First place winners at the medical center’s Veterans Creative Arts Show go on to national judging where they will compete against the winners from other medical centers. First place winners from national judging are invited to the weeklong National Veterans Creative Arts Festival, which will be at the VA Western New York Healthcare System in Buffalo, New York, Oct. 23 to 30, 2017.
