Heat is the number one weather related killer in the United States. Heat related illness results in hundreds of fatalities each year. In fact, on average, extreme heat claims more lives each year than floods, lightning, tornadoes and hurricanes combined. But what if you don’t understand what your weather professional is telling you?
The terminology used by local and national weather outlets, and agencies, provide guidance on weather events, but do we really know what the terms in the guidance mean? The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) websites provide an excellent starting point. Understanding the words and phrases used in warnings and alerts will help you begin to make choices and decisions truly focused on prevention and safety for you, loved ones, friends and co-workers.
Just like FEMA and NOAA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides information vital in understanding and preventing heat related illness. From preventing a heat related health issue or recognizing when one exists, the extreme heat information on the CDC website will help you keep everyone around you safe.
