MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – In an effort to protect Veterans and staff, the Martinsburg VA Medical Center (VAMC) is asking visitors and family members experiencing any flu-like symptoms to refrain from visiting the medical center.

Because of the high number of flu-related illnesses in the area, the medical center is recommending visitors be limited to immediate family members or caregivers. There are no restrictions on visitors to hospice. This is an effort to reduce influenza transmission. Special exceptions may be made for end of life circumstances.

The medical center’s infection prevention and control program manager, Sharon Self, said it is important for Veterans to take precautions this flu season. “The best thing a Veteran can do to protect themselves and their loved ones is get a flu shot,” she said. “Even if one gets the flu after getting a flu shot, the symptoms will be milder.

Martinsburg VAMC visitor and medical center information is available on the information line at 304-579-2605. Veterans can contact the Martinsburg VAMC medical advice line 24 hours a day, seven days a week by dialing 304-263-0811 and selecting option three.
