Martinsburg VA earns LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader Designation
April 5, 2018
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – The Martinsburg VA Medical Center (VAMC) has been recognized as a “Leader in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality” by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the country’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization.
The medical center is one of 418 health care facilities nationwide and one of only two medical centers in West Virginia to be named 2018 LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader. Facilities awarded this title meet key criteria, including patient and employee non-discrimination policies that specifically mention sexual orientation and gender identity, a guarantee of equal visitation for same-sex partners and parents, and LGBTQ health education for key staff members.
The findings were part of the HRC Foundation’s Healthcare Equality Index, a unique annual survey that encourages equal care for LGBTQ Americans by assessing inclusive policies and practices related to LGBTQ patients, visitors and employees.
“We are always committed to providing a diverse and inclusive workplace,” said Robyn Hardy, acting medical center equal employment opportunity and diversity management officer. “Diversity and inclusion are essential for an organization that delivers the best service to our Nation’s Veterans.”
