MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – The Martinsburg VA Medical Center’s Recreational Therapy Program offers a variety of sports and recreation programs to Veterans as components of a proactive healthy lifestyle.

Many people feel sports programs are something to do, but it’s more than that. Sports play a pivotal role in a Veterans rehabilitation and recovery plan.

When U.S. Air Force Veteran Brad Morrow came to the medical center he was introduced to the many recreation therapy programs offered.

“I was fearful to step outside of the box. The program gave me the courage to find the life I wanted for myself,” said Morrow. “I was trying to find myself, I needed structure.”

After completing the program Morrow moved out west. Today he is a senior studying Manufacturing Engineering at Western Washington University. “I am very grateful to Martinsburg. I had a life changing experience at the VA.”

Recreation Therapy offers Veterans an introduction to new sports while providing a positive role towards recovery.

U.S. Army Veteran Donald Charles started participating in volleyball to occupy his time. “If you want a positive change, this is a good way to start. Group meetings are not the only way to stay sober. Recreation shows me new things about myself, its part of my recovery.”

Charles credits his recreation therapist for support during his treatment at the medical center. “Fitness had been a big part of my life; I forgot how important that was to me.”

Recreation therapists and other Recreation Therapy employees work in conjunction with team members, Veterans and families to assist in continuum of care from admission to discharge.

The sports program provides a structured environment for daily, weekly, monthly and annual events.

Since 2011, the Recreation Therapy’s sports activities have played a pivotal role in the recovery plan of Veterans. Not only for Veterans who are athletic, but for anyone that just likes to participate for fun. Promoting physical wellness, mental wellness, whole health and an active lifestyle is a foundation of the Martinsburg VA Medical Center’s Recreation Therapy Program.
