Chaplain Service

Mission:

To achieve excellence in meeting the spiritual healthcare needs of Veterans.

Department of Veterans Affairs Chaplains:

  • Ensure that Veterans, both inpatient and outpatient, receive appropriate clinical pastoral care as desired or requested by the Veteran and/or the Veteran’s Medical Power of Attorney.
  • Ensure that the medical center, domiciliary and community living center patients’ constitutional right to free exercise of religion is protected. As long as it is consistent with treatment requirements and patient safety, and the religious practices can be reasonably accommodated, we will work to make it possible for all Veterans to engage in religious and/or spiritual practices regardless of their individual beliefs.
  • Protect Veteran patients from having religion imposed on them. This means it is the Veteran’s choice to participate (or not) in any spiritual and/or religious activity.

A chaplain will generally be a member of all interdisciplinary treatment teams and ensure that your spiritual and pastoral care needs are met.

Chaplains will typically visit at least once during your stay at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center. If you do not wish to be visited by a chaplain let the staff know.

Chaplains are available 24/7, particularly in urgent situations or emergencies.

If you desire to contact a local spiritual leader or clergy, the chaplain can facilitate that connection.

Chapels or meditation rooms are available for general use during regular business hours when not being used for other chaplain-sponsored activities.

A wide range of religious and spiritual literature is available in the Chaplain Service spaces (room 2D-103). Inpatients may request literature from a chaplain.

The Veterans Health Administration recognizes that spiritual and pastoral care must be integrated into the Whole Health Care of the Veteran. Chaplain services are available to all patients and, in some circumstances, to immediate family members and/or caregivers at their request.

Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) directors and medical center directors are responsible for making spiritual and pastoral care and counseling available to Veteran patients.

Chaplains implement the Spiritual and Pastoral Care Program on behalf of the VISN and facility directors.

Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) chaplains are professional health care providers on the interdisciplinary teams who are specifically trained to provide high quality spiritual and pastoral care to Veterans. This care is available to all Veterans, regardless of religious affiliation (if any). The choice to receive spiritual care from a VA chaplain remains the choice of the individual Veteran.
