Diabetes Treatment and Prevention

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that nearly 29 million Americans, or about 9% of the population have diabetes and nearly one in four Veterans receiving VA health care has diabetes. In addition, West Virginia has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the country. It is also estimated that 1 in 4 Americans with diabetes do not know they have diabetes!

The Martinsburg VA Medical Center is committed to diabetes treatment and prevention.

What we offer:

Diabetes Self-Management Education Class

An eight week course accredited by the American Diabetes Association available at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center and by video teleconference at all Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs).
Classes Include:

  • What Is Diabetes? What Do I Need To Do?
  • What Can I Eat?
  • What Medicines Do I Need For Diabetes?
  • Let's Get Moving!
  • Preventing Complications.
  • Healthy Teaching Kitchen (Martinsburg VAMC location only). VIDEO: Make a healthy meatloaf and spaghetti squash dish.
  • Mindfulness (Stress Management).
  • How Can I Keep Up The Good Work? Setting Goals and Overcoming Barriers.

Shared Medical Appointments

This group clinic was piloted in May 2015 in Martinsburg for patients on insulin with uncontrolled diabetes. Groups of 8-10 patients receive care from pharmacotherapy, nutrition, and psychology in one appointment.

Individual Nutrition and Pharmacotherapy Appointments

Contact your primary care team to schedule a one-on-one appointment with your team registered dietitian and pharmacist.

Endocrine Clinic

This clinic specializes in uncontrolled type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes, and other endocrine problems. This requires a consult from your primary care clinic.

MOVE! Program

MOVE! is a national weight management program for Veterans designed by the VA National Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (NCP). Weight loss can help reduce diabetic complications like high blood sugar. Click here to learn more about the MOVE! Program.

Fitness Center, Pool, and Group Fitness Classes

Request a recreation therapy consult from your primary care team to receive a pass.
You must have a medical clearance and pass in order to use the fitness center, pool, or participate in classes.
